An hashtag hijacking occurs when a hashtag is used to satirize or critique the original message it was intended for. Our work was focused to discover the reality behind this phenomenon and the main mechanics that made this practice so powerful.
In our website Stan Wars: the rise of a new army︎︎︎, we tried to depict a wide outlook of the topic, by analyzing the type of content and hashtags that helped these hijacking spread the most, the type of users involved in the hijacks and how these events were perceived by the public and by the media.
Today, hijackers are paving a new way when it comes to digital activism, but since this phenomenon is quite new, they are wanderers in this digital universe. Hitchhikers, if you may. That’s why we chose to create a guide to help those people navigate this new tool at their disposal: the hijacker’s guide to digital activism.
